For the last 3 weeks or so, there has been nothing but speculation about a ton of new products for Apple. New 3G iPhone, Mac Tablet, renamed .Mac, etc... So what is happening?

Yep, WWDC08 is just around the corner.

I just love all the rumors and speculation; "The new 3G iPhone blah blah this", "Shipping packages labeled Electric computers...", "Apple has changed it's hard coded '.Mac' strings to variables...", "me.com being held by company that Apple uses for it's domains...", "Apple attempting to get ipod.me, iphone.me, mac.me...".

Funny thing about all these speculations and rumors is that they are typically accurate. It just cracks me up that so many blog sites go after these including Daring Fireball, which really surprises me, I've always thought of Daring Fireball as being the beacon of solid information and fact.

This reminds me of a presidential election. You start hearing about the candidates almost a year in advance, and the ads on TV start getting more and more frequent to the point you just want to shoot the TV. Just before the election, there are more ads for the candidates than shows on TV. I get so annoyed by all the ads, I almost don't want to vote as a protest.

I'll be so glad when WWDC is over so that all the speculation can stop. Of course then it's "See, we were 100% correct with our rumors...", "We were right on the money...", etc... for at least 2 weeks after the show.

Sure will be glad when it's all over.

1.1.3 Update May Break Gmail
I got a call this morning from my Dad.

Him: Bad news.

Me: What?

Him: Your mother’s Gmail isn’t working on her iPhone.

Me: Oh no!

Him: Yes. Houston, we have a problem.

This basically ground my parent’s house to a halt this morning.

It turns out both of their Gmail accounts weren’t working, but they don’t appear to be alone in this. The specific error message is that imap.gmail.com isn’t available, and it just keeps checking for email. Outbound mail does go out, but there’s no verification that it goes.

I don’t really know what’s going wrong here, but if you recreate the Gmail account fresh on the iPhone, everything seems to work right again.

(Fortunately, the Gmail setup is pretty easy.)

This is interesting. I have read a couple of blogs now that have mentioned that Gmail was messing up on their iPhones.

This seems odd to me. I haven't seen any issues at all with Gmail on my iPhone. Now, I know that problems can crop up for some people and not others, but it just seems odd.

Now I have had problems with IMAP Gmail not working correctly with Mail.app. It works really nicely with Thunderbird, but I had some strange problems when sending email's via Mail.app. They may have been fixed by now. I haven't spent the time to try it since the first time I tried.

I guess I should be glad that I am not seeing these problems. I use Gmail as my main email account and all my other email accounts forward messages they receive to my Gmail account so that I can have access to all my mail all the time.

Usually, the Mac blogs and news sites I read fill up pretty quickly. I'm used to seeing about 50-75 posts a day from where I read.

Today, I have only seen about 15 or so posts.

My guess is that everyone is installing and playing around with their pre-ordered Leopard installations that were shipped FedEx Overnight like mine.

Heck, I would be too if I were actually at home right now. :(

So, thanks to a bunch of "early adopters" complaining about the price drop of the iPhone, Steve Jobs decided to give the "early adopters" a $100 store credit for helping sell the product that they decided to lower the price of.

Sure, it's not the difference that the price dropped, but it's at least something. I'm OK with that. I wouldn't mind $200, but the $100 will go towards the Leopard Family Pack when it comes out at the end of October. (Yes, I know it's supposed to come out "sometime" in October. But really, when has Apple ever put out something earlier than the very end of the month when they label a month as the release date?)

From what I have seen around the blogs I read, it looks like the $100 was a good price point.

Amusingly, I still see a few people complaining that the 4GB iPhone is now dead since they dropped that size from what they are selling. Arguments are that when new software updates come out, that the 4GB iPhone will be left in the dark. I seriously doubt that the 4GB iPhone will stop getting updates. I fully expect to see updates and games on my 4GB iPhone for quite some time to come. If not, well, I guess I'll have to get the newer phone and use the 4GB for hacking which I am still scared to death to try. (I really don't expect to be doing this anytime soon.)
